Designing an Employee Wellness Program that Works for Your Team

An employee wellness program is a series of initiatives that are used to actively support the pursuit of healthy employees. This goes beyond giving perks; it’s about creating a positive environment to endorse a balanced work-life practice.

By employing a thorough wellness program, employers provide a comfortable culture for their employees to work in. This directly affects their productivity, and, in extension, impacts the main business processing. Despite the long chain of effects, employee wellness programs are always worth investing in.

What to Include in an Employee Wellness Program

Your company probably already has a series of employee benefits that are offered in the hiring process. Whether you want to review these perks or design a new wellness program from scratch, there are several key aspects of employee wellness that you should include in the program.

Physical Wellness

Most companies have probably covered their employees’ physical health through health insurance. While the benefits given by each insurance company are different, they mostly cover the necessary treatment, such as medication prescriptions, surgical procedures, and consultations.

To support your employees further, you can extend this benefit by adding programs such as fitness classes, yoga or pilates classes, gym membership, or having sports weekends. You can also encourage healthy habits by having nutrition coaching or smoking cessation programs.

Mental Wellness

Although your body is physically healthy, you cannot function properly when your mental health is unwell. Fundamentally, supporting employees’ mental wellness starts with having a positive office culture. For example, encourage employees to take regular breaks between work and set a clear boundary between work and private life.

There are various mental wellness programs that you can include in your wellness arrangement. For instance, stress management workshops and meditation classes help with coping with stress. You can also provide access to mental health professionals for employee counseling and build their resilience.

Financial Wellness

Supporting employees’ financial wellness is not only about giving them a proper salary. Financial wellness also means your employees are able to control their spending and saving, and that they can make good financial choices that allow them to feel financially secure. To encourage better financial practices, you can offer programs such as workshops or webinars on budgeting, seminars on taxes, and other resources to help with financial planning.

Implementing Employee Wellness Program

Fundamentally, the goal of an employee wellness program is to create a working environment that is comfortable, uplifting, and supports employees’ wellness. Thus, a successful employee wellness program is one that is already rooted in the company culture. There are several tips on implementing your employee wellness program.

  • Assess your needs. A good program is a useful program. Find out what your employees need through surveys. This way, you can tailor the program according to their needs and interests. Whether it’s a gym membership or budgeting workshops, ensure that it’s relevant to your employees.
  • Start small. Always try out your plan on a small scale before launching a full-scale program right away. This trial run allows you to gather feedback from your employees and improve the lacking aspects.
  • Start from the Top. To get the culture right, it all starts with the leaders. According to Forbes, leadership styles directly impact the employees’ mental health and safety, and even extend to the workers’ children. Therefore, it’s crucial to ensure that all of your team’s leaders are on board with the program.
  • Constant Evaluation. To ensure your program remains relevant to your employees’ needs, you need to monitor the program constantly. Ask for employee feedback regularly for improvements and make changes when necessary.

When an employee is healthy both physically and mentally, they will be more engaged in their daily tasks. Thus, the main goal of an employee wellness program is to encourage and maintain a healthy working culture for employees. Its design and programs should be centered around what your employees need.
