The Fine Line Between Thoughtful and Inappropriate: Gifts to Avoid At Work

Insights

Corporate gifting culture is a meaningful gesture to strengthen relationships, but getting the right for your colleagues can be tricky. Avoid these gifts to make your gift count.

Corporate gifting culture is a form of appreciation, as well as a strategic practice to build or maintain professional relationships. Whether it’s gifted to employees, partners, or clients, a calculated gift given at the correct time makes the recipient feel valued.

However, choosing a gift for your colleagues is very different from choosing a gift for your friends. There are some spoken and unspoken rules that make corporate gifting challenging. Read more about it below.

What Gift to Avoid?

Professional relationships can be confusing—it’s not as friendly as close friends, definitely not as intimate as lovers or family. However, giving too general gifts, like a plain white mug, can also be misinterpreted as detached and lazy.

Here are some other things that you shouldn’t give to your colleagues, clients, or business partners.

Personal or Intimate Items

As a general rule, personal items mean anything that the recipient might wear on their body. Personal items are seen as intimate gifts—although you are personally acquainted with the recipient of the gift, it’s generally not appropriate to give this kind of gift in the office setting.

There are many things that can be considered personal items; for example, skincare, cosmetics, jewelry, and clothes. However, there are also exceptions, such as socks or sun gloves.

Too Expensive Gifts

While giving cheap and poor-quality freebies is a no, giving too expensive gifts can be easily misunderstood as bribery. Although your intention may be harmless, it can be easily misunderstood by other people. Additionally, spending too much on a gift might make the recipient feel they have to match your gift, creating an awkward tension.

Religious or Political Gifts

Religious or political-themed items are highly inappropriate for a corporate gift. Religion and politics are deeply connected to a person’s identity, and these topics often evoke strong emotions. Giving such an item as a corporate gift can be interpreted as rude and imposing, causing an uncomfortable tension in the workplace.

Useless Gifts

Avoid giving items that your recipient won’t use. Unless your recipient explicitly states that they need one, avoid giving too general things like a basic mug, photo frames, or a water bottle. Chances are, your recipient already owns those things, and they don’t need more from you.

Food with Short Shelf Life

Food is generally an acceptable item to give in a corporate setting. Common options include branded chocolates, seasonal treats, and healthy snacks like dried fruits or nuts. However, avoid food with a short shelf life, such as cakes, pastries, or cut fruits and vegetables. If your gift recipient lives alone, chances are they won’t finish the food you give them that quickly.

Why Gift-Giving Etiquette is Important

Essentially, gift giving is a non-verbal communication, where you are expressing your emotions through the things you give. For instance, when a daughter gives a present to her mother on Mother's Day, this gift can be interpreted as the daughter’s love and gratitude to her mother.

In the professional setting, this kind of symbolic language can be prone to misinterpretation. For instance, there are certain things that can be considered too private and impolite to give to a colleague. It’s also important to think of the correct occasion when to give a client or business partner a gift. Thus, minding the corporate gifting etiquette is important to ensure that your gift conveys the correct meaning that you had intended.
